Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Writing
Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Writing Program Overview
Immerse yourself in a full semester of intensive study at Spalding University’s Naslund-Mann Graduate School of Writing. Our certificate courses are taught by the supportive faculty of our low residency Master of Fine Arts in Writing, nationally recognized as a Top 10 program. In the certificate program, you’ll earn 15 hours of graduate academic credit and have the option to matriculate into Spalding’s MFA or MA in Writing program. This way, you can earn a graduate certificate on the way to completing a master’s degree and for about the same costs as the master’s degree alone. Our low-residency model makes graduate study possible for students with full-time jobs and substantial family commitments.

I was very interested in the Post-Bac option because I already have a couple of post-grad degrees and I don’t have any goals that would need an MFA. What I wanted was an opportunity to stretch myself and to learn much more about writing. My mind was stretched and my knowledge was challenged and I felt more alive than I had in many years. I liked the cross-section of ages and did not feel out of place. The residency was crammed with learning opportunities. I loved hearing authors talk about their writing and I learned so much from the sessions on different aspects of writing. The entire residency was just an outstanding learning experience. I was exhausted, but energized.

I can’t say enough good things about my independent study. My mentor gave me detailed, specific feedback on the work that I submitted to her. She helped me look at my work in new ways and asked me questions that helped me get to a deeper level. She also patiently, through models and feedback, helped me understand how to analyze published writing so that I started reading like a writer. Even more, she encouraged me through her belief in what I was trying to write. Those twin gifts of feedback and encouragement have made all the difference in my work.
